The Center of Integrated Geomorphology for the Mediterranean Area (CGIAM) is a public-law research institute based in Potenza, Basilicata (Italy).
We are currently seeking partners to collaborate with us in creating a proposal for the Interreg Euro-MED Programme’s 8th Call.

We would like to propose a project in the field of innovative strategies for addressing the threat of wildfires. The project would focus on prevention, preparedness and response to reduce damage and improve resilience, perfectly fitting in mission 2 (Protecting, Restoring and Valorising the Natural Environment and Heritage) of the programme.

The proposal is based on the experience of the projects implemented in recent years by CGIAM, financed by Interreg programmes and will allow testing of the main results of these projects, extending impact and ensuring the development of integrated strategies and actions against wildfires at the Mediterranean Basin Level.

The main fields of action will be the following:
– Test and adoption of innovative technologies and methodologies for the analysis of wildfire risk and planning of actions at territorial level;
– Transfer of best practices in the field of preventive actions against wildfires in forestry and agriculture;
– Dissemination of best practices in wildfire risk awareness and community involvement.

CGIAM has extensive experience in the Interreg programmes and in transnational institution-building projects, such as the Phare Twinning and EuropeAid programmes.

Our main strengths include:
– Scientific and technical expertise in territorial and environmental analysis, geomorphological risk assessment, and monitoring methodologies.
– Great capacity in results transfer and technological innovation, turning research outcomes into applicable tools and solutions.
– A wide portfolio of validated, transferable project outputs covering climate change adaptation, methodologies for analysis and planning of actions on wildfires prevention control and impact mitigation.
– A decades long experience in turning technical and scientific knowledge into public-facing content through exhibitions and citizen-oriented initiatives.

We are very interested in the wildfire prevention and territorial resilience concept you are developing. SKRIPTA is an SME from Bosnia and Herzegovina with strong experience working with municipalities and supporting local-government innovation and implementation.

Our added value would be on the territorial uptake and municipal implementation side. Bosnia and Herzegovina has faced significant wildfire pressures, while smaller and underdeveloped municipalities often have limited access to advanced prevention technologies and limited capacity to integrate them into existing local systems.

SKRIPTA could help identify suitable wildfire-prone pilot municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, work with local authorities to define their operational challenges and capacities, and support the adaptation, testing and uptake of technologies, methodologies and preventive practices developed by CGIAM and other technical partners.

We could also contribute through human-centred design, service design, stakeholder engagement and institutional capacity support, helping ensure that technical solutions are practical, usable and embedded in local planning, emergency-management and maintenance arrangements.

This could give the consortium additional Western Balkan pilot territories while demonstrating how proven wildfire-prevention solutions can be transferred effectively to municipalities with more limited technical and administrative capacities.

We would be very interested to explore whether this role could complement the partnership currently taking shape.

Hello Yelyzaveta,
your project idea caught our attention, especially because it looks at wildfire resilience from a broader perspective – not only prevention and detection, but also preparedness, planning and the role of local communities.

We are Development and Research Center RRC Ormož, a public regional development institution from eastern Slovenia, and we would be interested in joining the project as a Project Partner from Slovenia.

We work closely with municipalities and local public authorities, mostly in rural and small-town areas. Our work covers regional development, climate adaptation, sustainable mobility, stakeholder engagement, participatory planning and the implementation of EU cooperation projects.

Through URBACT ECONNECTING, we have been working on more sustainable and resilient rural–urban territories, accessibility, co-creation and integrated planning. Through URBACT EcoCore, we have also gained experience with green transition, low-carbon local development and involving local stakeholders in practical local solutions.
We believe we could complement CGIAM’s scientific and technical expertise with a strong territorial and local implementation perspective. RRC Ormož could support the involvement of municipalities and local stakeholders, help identify and coordinate a suitable pilot setting in Slovenia, contribute to awareness and capacity-building activities, and help test how the proposed approaches work in the everyday reality of smaller local authorities.

What we find particularly interesting is the possibility of connecting technical knowledge with what actually happens on the ground – how municipalities can use the results in prevention, preparedness and local planning, and how communities can be involved in the process.

We would be happy to hear more about the proposal you are developing and to explore whether RRC Ormož could be a good fit for the partnership.

In the context of the Interreg Euro-MED 8th Call (and Interreg Danube), Haskovo Municipality is highly motivated to act as a reliable local authority partner for testing and validating new solutions. Our specific added value includes:

• Providing real-life urban and administrative environments for testing green, digital, and socially inclusive pilot actions.

• Regeneration of an existing pocket park in poor condition, restoration and improvement of greenery, shaded areas and seating, biodiversity enhancement, new trees and climate resilient planting, improved accessibility, small-scale recreational community facilities.
• Suitable municipal land that needs regeneration beside the river that is suitable for greenhouse development and historically been used as a vegetable field in the past to explore the relationship between urban agriculture, water resources and environmental protection.
• Integrate the water protection and biodiversity, catching plastic in the river so land restoration and suitable food production can coexist with river protection.
• Aligning tested methodologies with our current SECAP and Climate Strategies to ensure long-term scalability and sustainability.
• Engaging local stakeholders, citizens, and vulnerable groups in the testing and evaluation phases.
• Sharing established best practices in energy efficiency and contributing to cross-border knowledge transfer within the Euro-MED and Danube macro-regions.

Haskovo has accumulated extensive experience in implementing pilot actions and projects related to energy efficiency, urban development, and climate adaptation. Key reference projects include:
• CARE-GET Project: Funded under the European Urban Initiative (EUI-IA 2nd Call).
• 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC): Active participation in the EU initiative guiding cities towards green and digital transformation.
• Transition to Climate-Resilient Communities: Funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism (Climate Programme, Contract No. BGENVIRONMENT 4.004 0013).
• National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP): Implementation of extensive energy efficiency measures and sustainable urban infrastructure upgrades.
