Tourist Board of Sali Municipality – Dugi Otok, Croatia

Potential role: Project Partner / Croatian Island Pilot / Uptake & Replication Territory

The Tourist Board of Sali Municipality is interested in joining a consortium currently being developed for Interreg Euro-MED Call 7 – Sustainable Tourism.

We offer Dugi Otok, a peripheral Croatian island with 11 dispersed settlements, as a real-life pilot and receiving territory for the transfer and adaptation of proven MMM solutions.

Dugi Otok combines several challenges within one compact Mediterranean island environment: strong tourism seasonality; visitor concentration at well-known natural attractions; intensive nautical tourism; climate-related risks affecting coastal and natural assets; dispersed infrastructure; protected natural areas; and highly diverse archaeological, cultural and natural heritage, part of which remains under-interpreted and outside the main tourism flows.

Potential pilot environments include:
• Sakarun – seasonal visitor pressure and tourism-flow management;
• Telašćica Nature Park – protected-area management, nautical tourism and environmental pressures;
• coastal archaeological heritage, including Mala Proversa – climate vulnerability, monitoring and digital preservation;
• Vlakno prehistoric cave site – digital documentation and virtual interpretation of sensitive heritage;
• Strašna peć cave – sustainable interpretation of natural/geological heritage;
• 11 island settlements and dispersed heritage – cultural routes, alternative itineraries, visitor dispersal and seasonality reduction.

The island also offers a strong potential local stakeholder ecosystem, including the Municipality of Sali, Telašćica Nature Park, University of Zadar, nature and heritage institutions, local communities, associations and tourism businesses. Dugi Otok has an existing Destination Management Plan, providing a policy framework for the uptake of successful project results.

We are particularly interested in transferable MMM outputs and emerging consortia related to sustainable and climate-resilient coastal/island tourism, visitor-flow management, protected areas and nautical tourism, digital preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage, cultural routes, visitor dispersal and destination governance.

Relevant MMM outputs identified as particularly promising include Co-Evolve4BG (MMM_NX28), ARCHAEODIGIT (MMM_IH14), ENSERES (MMM_NX22), POSEIDONE (MMM_IS10) and CROSSDEV (MMM_NX05/06).

Our objective is not to increase visitor numbers, but to manage tourism pressure more intelligently, safeguard vulnerable island heritage and distribute tourism benefits more evenly across the territory and throughout the year.

We would particularly welcome contact from Lead Partners, owners/providers of eligible MMM outputs, universities and research centres, public authorities and consortia still looking for a Croatian island receiving territory.
