Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and the largest political, administrative, cultural and educational center in the country, with a current population of 1,3 million inhabitants. Sofia Municipality is an administrative unit with 24 districts. The main activities conducted by the Municipality include:preservation of the environment, healthcare, social, educational and cultural activities for the citizens of Sofia. One of SM’s key competences lies in adopting and implementing strategies, programs and plans on local issues, concerning the sustainable development, adaptation towards climate changes, reducing the carbon footprint, promoting behavioral patterns for energy efficiency in industry and households in the city.
SM is the public authority responsible for climate and energy management regulation and planning of its territory. Due to its role, the partner is the local authority responsible for the drawing up, implementation and management of climate changes and energy efficiency strategies and policies.
Sofia Municipality has developed a Waste Management Program for the period 2021-2028. One of the strategic goals set in the Action Plan for the Program to achieve the goals for preparation for reuse and recycling of household waste is “Study of the possibilities of the municipality to introduce circular models to support the circular economy for the priority waste streams:
● food products and household food waste;
● fast-moving goods and waste from processing during industrial production of beverages;
● packaging and packaging waste;
● electrical and electronic equipment and EEE waste;
● textile products and textile waste;
● furniture and furniture production waste;
● construction waste;
● cars and IUMPS.’
In view of the above, we would like to be involved in a project proposal in connection with waste management and the transition to a circular economy, Objective 2.6. “Support for the Circular Economy”.
