Developing and promoting ‘Smart Tourism’ as defined by the European Commission: “Smart tourism responds to new challenges and demands in a fast-changing sector, including the evolution of digital tools, products and services; equal opportunity and access for all visitors; sustainable development of the local area; and support to creative industries, local talent and heritage“. Smart Tourism is thus closely related to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage with digitalisation in sustainable cultural tourism development and promotion. The new ‘European Capital of Smart Tourism Award’ since 2019 has components of ‘Sustainability, Accessibility, Digitalisation, Cultural Heritage & Creativity’. Accessibility includes services that are multilingual and digitally available to all travellers and visitors, regardless of their age, cultural background or their physical disability. Sustainability does not only mean to manage and protect your natural resources as a city, but to reduce seasonality impacts on the environment and to involve the local community. Digitalisation uses digital technologies to enhance all aspects of the tourism experience, enabling simpler access to services for all travellers, as well as to help local businesses to grow. The aim of the Smart Tourism Capital awards is to promote innovation to strengthen smart destinations in Europe, to enhance tourism offers for visitors and to facilitate new partnerships, networking and the exchange of best practice. It also aims to foster the EU’s forward-thinking tourism offer to global audiences and sustainably increase attraction to pioneering destinations that offer unique visitor experiences. Cultural Heritage aspects are about protecting and capitalising on the cultural heritage as well as local potential and its creative assets for the benefit of the tourism destination, the industry and the visiting tourists in general. All of the above lead towards ‘Smart Destinations’.
‘Smart Destinations’ (including cultural heritage and creativity, accessibility, low-carbon smart and sustainable mobility, climate action, host communities’ engagement, etc) initiative is closely related to the next generation of cultural tourism development and promotion. A smart destination is one with a strategy for technology, innovation, sustainability, accessibility and inclusivity along the entire tourism cycle: before, during and after the trip. A smart destination is also one with residents as well as tourists in mind, factoring multilingualism, cultural idiosyncrasies and seasonality into tourism planning. Smart Destinations are key to the transformation of the tourism sector; by continuously and accurately measuring, integrating and analyzing data for efficient decision-making, prioritization and anticipation of challenges, they create a seamless and exciting experience for tourists while managing local resources efficiently, including cultural assets. Smart destinations deploy digital applications that make it possible to offer increasingly customized services and to differentiate cultural tourist destinations that provide added value while preserving the natural, social and cultural environment. Smart destinations can make tourism governance more inclusive through inclusive entities, such as boards, trusts or foundations, which represent all public/private stakeholders in the destination. They can help ensure maximum accessibility in sites, products and services, eliminating barriers to mobility.

The team of the PSŽ Regional Development Coordinator prepares, develops and manages projects financed from EU funds and projects of interregional and international cooperation, prepares expert
strategic decisions and proposals for development programs. Our project idea/activity is related to the reconstruction and presentation of three prehistoric houses (VR/AR) at the archaeological site Kaptol (continental Croatia) dating to the early iron age – Hallstatt culture. Futhermore, as part of the project activities of the Interreg Iron-Age-Danube project (2017-2019), a cultural route called Paths of the Warriors – Early Iron Age in the Požega Basin (one part of the bigger European route The Iron Age Danube Route) was designed with the aim of presentation and popularization of this important archaeo site in Europe. Along the route, there are 11 educational and information boards that want to introduce visitors to different aspects of life in the Iron Age Kaptol.
After the complex candidacy, on 19 May 2021, The Iron Age Danube Route was awarded as the Cultural route with the certification of the Council of Europe Cultural Routes.
So, it would be great to email me marijana.lukacevic@panora.hr (for more information about this important archeo site, earlier investments and planned, etc) because we are very interested to participate as a project partners. My name is Maria Assunção Gato and I am a researcher at ISCTE- Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (Portugal), in a prestigious interdisciplinary research unit focused on socio-economic and territorial dynamics called DINÂMIA’CET. In the last years, I have been working on a European research-action project dedicated to creative based cultural tourism in low-density territories, which involved the conception, prototyping and implementation of a national network of pilot projects (40) of creative tourism in low-density territories, based on principles of sustainability, safeguard and valorisation of local heritage, as well as the resilience of local communities. I would like to continue to explore these themes at the level of experiences in the territories, co-production and transfer of knowledge between academia and local stakeholders. I see in this Call the perfect opportunity to develop and test innovative and good practice initiatives/experiences of smart and sustainable tourism (environmental, cultural, social, economic) in territories of high tourism potential that are being dilapidated in various ways.
Please contact me (maria.gato@iscte-iul.pt) if you are interested in considering Portugal as a partner.

As the name of the foundation suggests, the main objective is “DEVELOP”, which means Social, Professional and Territorial development.
Environmental care, sustainable and territorial development is one of the main area of activity of the Foundation.Although Developia is a newcomer in European projects, but it was born from the experience of two very active players in the field of European projects, namely: the SME Geinnova and the NGO instituto ikigai.
As for our experience in European projects: we help other institutions in their search for funding for social projects and share our know-how in the management of international projects, ensuring the achievement of objectives and their success. Furthermore, we have experience and knowledge in online training, through our own platform and with the capacity to develop online courses in different languages. If you are interested in knowing more, contact us:
