Project idea
Our project idea involves the study, testing and transferability of innovative technological models and civic best practices in waste management as a way to make tourism destinations more sustainables.Project objectives
– Tackle the waste stream caused by seasonal tourism in the Mediterranean mountain and rural territories
– Empower the local municipalities in addressing the externalities caused by tourism in terms of municipal waste
– Empower managers of natural and mountain attractions (parks, ski facilities, monuments, archaeological sites) in the management of their waste system.Partners profiles
The project will combine actors that will gather together from different perspectives.
For the scope of the project, it is deemed necessary to involve partners acting at different levels. Specifically:– Some organisations, acting as research centres, will be mainly in charge of the study phase and of the elaboration of an integrated action plan that involves multiple dimensions to tackle.
– Other types of beneficiaries, corresponding to public administrations and institutions and local stakeholders (consortia for the management of mountain areas) with governance roles, will have an impactful approach in the phase of testing, through the implementation of best practices from virtuous communities, small-scale actions, awareness raising and capacity building campaigns, creation and/or promotion of eco-itineraries and testing of innovative solutions for waste management system.
We are looking for both municipalities and research centres that have a key interest and/or expertise in the project.
We will be glad to discuss the project idea more in detail.02/08/2024 at 10:42 #27069Blagoy KlimovParticipantDear Saramaria,

We are SME Fortica Natural Park and we are managing Fortica mountain area near Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our location is very popular tourist attraction which offers some outdoor activities as well as restaurant and sky-walk. We already started with some recycling and up-cycling activities on our own but wish to introduce innovative solutions to waste management, so therefore we would be interested to take part in the project as local stakeholder. I hope this message finds you well.
At YMCA Thessaloniki, we are excited to share our latest project proposal focused on addressing waste management challenges in tourism-heavy regions, particularly in the Mediterranean’s mountain and rural areas. Our aim is to enhance sustainability practices through innovative technology and civic best practices.
Project Objectives:
– Mitigate the waste stream produced by seasonal tourism in Mediterranean mountain and rural territories.
– Support local municipalities in tackling the environmental impact of tourism on municipal waste systems.
– Empower managers of natural and mountain attractions (parks, ski resorts, archaeological sites, etc.) to manage their waste more effectively. For this project, we are looking to collaborate with organizations from various sectors. Specifically, we need:
Research Centers: Your role would be instrumental in the study phase, creating a comprehensive action plan that integrates multiple dimensions of waste management.
The YMCA Thessaloniki takes pride in having partaken successfully in several European projects thus far (such as Interreg and Erasmus+) and is keen on partnering with other bodies to form a consortium for EUROMED as a country from Greece.
The YMCA Thessaloniki core values are caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The YMCA Thessaloniki is devoted to empower young people to reach their fullest potential. Additionally, the YMCA Thessaloniki provides ample opportunities to better one’s mind, body and spirit. There are multiple projects running simultaneously, and on multiple levels. There are camps for young people, the Youth Leadership Training Program for teenagers, social actions to help immigrants and refugees in the region, as well as a dedication to amateur sports. The YMCA Thessaloniki brought many sports to Greece, namely basketball and volleyball.
We would love the opportunity to explore how your expertise or local interests align with this initiative and discuss how we could collaborate to make a lasting environmental impact.
Looking forward to your thoughts and hoping for the chance to work together.
Kind regards,
Elias Tezapsidis
