Project summary:
Project aims to reduce both air pollution and urban congestion in Mediterranean cities. It plans to create low-emission zones in city centres and encourage the expansion of pedestrian-friendly environments. The project will deliver a comprehensive database of emission levels, traffic patterns, and successful case studies of implemented traffic-calmed zones. With a transnational approach, the project addresses Europe’s common challenge of rising city emissions and furthers the EU’s Green Deal goals. Ultimately, ERIEL paves the way towards healthier, sustainable living spaces for city dwellers, tourists, and future generations.
What are the territorial challenge(s) that will be tackled by your project?
ERILE project is primarily focused on the implementation of low emission zones and pedestrian zones, then it’s aiming to address and bring about several beneficial changes:
• Reduced Traffic Noise: Decreased vehicle traffic in these zones will lead to significantly less traffic noise, contributing to more peaceful urban environments.
• Lower Emissions: With restrictions on certain types or categories of vehicles, especially those that are major contributors to pollution, the number of polluting emissions will drop significantly, improving air quality in urban areas.
• Urban Regeneration: The creation of these zones often influences urban design, leading to improved infrastructure and even large scale urban regeneration. Pedestrian areas, in particular, can revitalise public spaces, make areas more liveable, and potentially attract more people and businesses.
• Urban Resilience: Strengthening the capacity of the cities to recover quickly from various challenges posed by the effects of climate change (like heatwaves, heavy rainfall, etc).
• Revitalization of Local Businesses and Shops: Restricting vehicle traffic can increase foot traffic, boosting local economies, shops, services and markets.
• Healthier Lifestyle: By encouraging walking and cycling, these zones contribute to healthier lifestyles for residents, reducing public health risks associated with lack of physical activity.
• Safety: With fewer cars on the streets, pedestrian zones can reduce the risk of accidents, making the city safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
While addressing these challenges, the ERILE project plans to transform urban centers into more sustainable, liveable and attractive environments.Work Package 1 – Research and Analysis
This stage may operate on identifying specific urban zones to be developed as low emission or pedestrian zones and conducting thorough research, including environmental impact assessment and socio-economic factors. Broadly, activities could include:
• Detailed study and mapping of the selected urban zones.
• Collecting and analysing data about traffic, emissions, noise levels, etc.
• Conducting surveys to understand public opinion and potential social and economic effects.
Work Package 2 – Planning and Design
At this stage, the aim would be detailing what the re-developed zones would look like and how they will function. This could include activities such as:
• Feasibility Study development
• Designing urban layouts for remodeled zones.
• Calculating potential emission and noise reductions.
• Identifying potential challenges and solutions, e.g., redirection of traffic, parking management, etc.
Work Package 3 – Implementation, Dissemination, Evaluation, and Scaling
This work package would involve the execution of plans, monitoring the progress and impact of changes, disseminating the results to relevant stakeholders and sectors, and planning for scaling or replicating the project’s successes. Activities might include:
• Implementing urban zone modifications, including formation of low emissions and pedestrian zones.
• Conducting awareness campaigns about the changes, their environmental, and socio-economic benefits to involve and inform the public and win their support and cooperation.
• Monitoring and assessing the outcome of the modifications through continual data collection and analysis, adjusting strategies as required based on feedback or evolving challenges.
• Dissemination of results: This could include the creation and distribution of reports, presentations, and other informational materials detailing project successes, lessons learned, and benefits realized. Target audiences could include local residents, urban planners, governmental bodies, environmental organizations, etc.
• Evaluating the potential for scaling: Based on the project’s success, plans for replicating or scaling the model in other zones or cities could be developed. This could involve studying the applicability of the model in different contexts, identifying potential partners for scaling, and seeking funding or policy support for expanded implementation.10/04/2024 at 10:17 #24306Josip MiškićParticipantPozdrav Mateo,

We are the public administration governing a territory encompassing 3.3 million inhabitants and 36 municipalities, one of which, of course, is Barcelona. We have various responsibilities such as mobility and transport, waste management, water management, housing, environment and climate, and urban and social development, among others. In this regard, we operate as a strong government that implements several projects in our region and upholds core values such as sustainability and inclusivity.
In this context, we are interested in participating as a partner in an Interreg Euro-MED project, and your proposal sounds interesting. Barcelona Metropolitan Area and some of its municipalities have already install several Low Emissions Zones, called ZBE Rondes de Barcelona:The ZBE Rondes de Barcelona is an area of over 95 km2 that includes Barcelona and the surrounding municipalities around the ring roads, where the circulation of more polluting vehicles is progressively restricted. This is one of the municipal measures to ensure the quality of the air we breathe and guarantee the right to health within the city.
For this reason, because of our commitment, and despite our already advanced situation, my team and I are thinking that a partnership could perfectly fit both our needs and that we could profit from mutual benefit while developing a conjoint project. Therefore, with this email I kindly ask for more information regarding your proposal sent by email to the following addres: jarango@amb.cat.
Thank you,
Julia Arango
