The Interreg Euro-MED Programme recently concluded its consultation on the future of Interreg beyond 2027, engaging stakeholders and citizens across the Mediterranean region. This initiative was organised in collaboration with other transnational Interreg programmes, including CENTRAL EUROPE, IPA ADRION, Alpine Space, NEXT MED, and Sudoe, ensuring a unified and comprehensive approach to gathering input.
Stakeholder Engagement: Collaboration for a Unified Vision
The consultation drew 248 responses from stakeholders representing a wide array of organizations, including public authorities, SMEs, NGOs, and research institutions. A unified survey platform facilitated this effort, ensuring comprehensive and diverse input. The consultation highlighted critical challenges, such as the need for enhanced resilience to climate change, promotion of sustainable practices, and fostering innovative solutions. Stakeholders also emphasized the importance of simplifying administrative processes and strengthening partnerships for impactful cooperation.
Citizen Voices: A Fresh Perspective
In parallel, a targeted consultation engaged young people with experience in Interreg projects. Participants identified climate change, sustainable development, and social inclusion as priority areas for transnational cooperation. They also called for improved accessibility to funding and greater opportunities for youth involvement in shaping project strategies.
Key Recommendations for the Future
The consultation results underscore the need for:
- Enhanced sustainability measures, including nature-based solutions and renewable energy projects.
- Broader and more inclusive partnerships, with stronger engagement from civil society and underrepresented groups.
- Simplified processes to reduce administrative burdens and support diverse stakeholders, including small organizations.
- Flexible and adaptive funding mechanisms to address emerging challenges and opportunities.
Interreg Euro-MED is committed to integrating these insights to refine its approach and ensure that future programming meets the evolving needs of the Mediterranean region.
