AREANATejo is the Regional Energy and Environment Agency of Alto Alentejo Region, in Portugal. We play a central role and works closely with local communities; our geographical area of operation covers the 15 municipalities belonging to Alto Alentejo sub-region/Portalegre District (Alter do Chão, Arronches, Avis, Campo Maior, Castelo de Vide, Crato, Elvas, Fronteira, Gavião, Marvão, Monforte, Nisa, Portalegre, Ponte de Sor and Sousel), with around 105.000 inhabitants (2021 census) and an average surface area of 6.000 km². AREANATejo’s vision is to contribute to energy efficiency and the better use of local resources and renewable energy, ensuring the region’s development.

We are very interested in joining a consortium under the forthcoming Interreg Euro-MED Call on Green Living Areas.

We have been involved in European co-financed projects since 2008 (Leonardo da Vinci, ERASMUS+, INTERREG POCTEP, INTERREG MED and H2020 Programmes). We have 20 years of experience and we implemented already more than 40 national and European projects.
AREANATejo is Covenant of Mayors Supporter since April 2021 and member of FEDARENE since May 2026. In these last years, we have implemented some projects related to the promotion of renewable energy sources (renewable energy communities), but also some projects targeted at the empowerment of local and regional authorities in the Mediterranean region with knowledge and methodological approach to design energy transition policies and plans efficiently in rural areas, with the active participation of all relevant actors.

We believe that local authorities play a key role in building greener, more resilient and climate-neutral living areas. The Energy and Environment Agencies have a central role of proximity to the territories in which they are integrated. With regard to AREANATejo, specifically, the projects that we develop are specifically targeted at our stakeholders. Thus, we highlight the proximity work that we develop with our beneficiaries and which is fundamental to support Municipalities in decision-making or in the implementation of measures.

We believe we can provide a valuable bridge between European project results and their effective implementation at the local level, ensuring their transferability and long-term impact.
