The Mediterranean basin faces one of the most dramatic consequences and risks related to climate change as the entire region is warming 20% faster than the global average, which will in turn have severe impacts on already strained ecosystems and on vulnerable economies of this area. The transport sector is a major source of GHG emissions and one of the main climate change contributors. An accelerated adoption of EVs is needed for a tangible reduction in GHGs, which will, however, require millions of AC charge points in homes, workplaces, and other temporary destinations. Our project lays a foundation for a potential transformation of any major city in this regard. For instance, citizens living in multiunit housing would have a common place (not on street charging) to charge their EVs overnight, avoid risky extensions from house to EV, lower cost than charging at public chargers, use energy resources available efficiently (i.e. overnight when there is lower demand) without concerns to run out of battery or stressing the grid. Also, unpleasant noise and the discomfort of smelling pollutants would be reduced to near zero. This project is also focused on renewable energy management and grid stability. For instance, the renewable energy produced should be first consumed, then stored in batteries; and the grid should only be used when there is not enough renewable energy available. The system should harmonise supply (renewable energy and grid) and demand (i.e. EV chargers, heat pumps, electric bicycles, lighting, internet connected devices) without exceeding the grid capacity. The implementation and management of the infrastructure will be executed by experts in facility and energy infrastructure management and all local requirements will be considered when deploying the wholesome solutions covering all steps from initial installation to regular maintenance.

I represent the portuguese association of start-ups. We would be a valuable partner to promote entrepreneurial initiatives on the results of the project, thus promoting the sustainability of the results
We also have something to say on renewable energy and batteries. For example one alternative to the not-very-green lithium battery could be the pumped storage hydropower
https://www.energy.gov/eere/articles/10-reasons-love-water-batteriesAnother alternative is the heating of water, which is to use very very large and very well isolated water containers as storage of renewable energy. when you have an excess of energy you use it to heat up the water, and when you are lacking renewable energy you use the hot water to produce new energy
please write me to projects@apsu.pt if you want us in your project. we can also engage local municipalities
Kind regards
Nuno

The Municipality of Heraklion is intrested to be partner in your proposal. We would like to have more information and details on the development of your project idea. To be able to consider possible colaboration please contact us on euprograms3@heraklion.gr
Heraklion is the capital of Crete and one of the Mediterranean region’s most fascinating and vibrant cities. At times one of the most economically active towns in the wider region. Heraklion is the fourth largest city in Greece. According to the results of the 2021 census, the municipality’s population is 157.452 people.
In March 2011, the Municipality of Heraklion signed the Mayors’ Pact, which is an ambitious initiative to involve local authorities and citizens in reducing energy consumption, saving resources and upgrading the quality of life of citizens. This European Commission’s main objective is to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020. For this purpose, the Sustainable Energy Action Plan was developed as a tool for identifying and certifying the energy policy of the Municipality and its intention to achieve the above objective. The participation of the Municipality of Heraklion following the proposal of the Energy Center of the Region of Crete for the Govenant Capacity project, co-funded by the Europe – Intelligent Energy Program, is an important part of the training of the SDAE and aims to support the development of Action Plans On Sustainable Energy in Europe. Specialized Economy In recent years, institutional players in the city, as well as public and private organizations have worked together more closely to promote and capitalize on the benefits of the city. Heraklion has an economy with comparative advantages in the agro-food sector and tourism. Emerging sectors of the economy are the Environment / Energy and innovation / new technologies sectors.
The Heraklion Municipality is currently implementing many projects regarding energy efficiency in public buildy, trasportation. Since this priority for the municipality we concider your proposal an assent to the strategic orientation.Regards,
Maria Tsagkataki
