  • Dear Natasa,

I’m Lucia and I’m writing to you from the Centre of Integrated Geomorphology for the Mediterranean Area (CGIAM), an Italian scientific body of public law engaged in the definition of scientific methodologies, technological development, and implementation of tools and services for the observation, analysis, and monitoring of territory and environment to mitigate the damages from natural hazards, first of all, hydrogeological-environmental risks.

Your project idea sounds very interesting to us. In this regard, we have coordinated SPRINt, a project funded by an Italian foundation aimed at defining different methodologies for monitoring the phenomenon of forest fires, such as the selection of satellite data processing algorithms for delimiting burnt areas, the study of the burn severity and the recovery capacity of the burnt areas using satellite data, etc. Particular attention was paid to modeling relating to the determination of fire behavior which led to the elaboration of a series of layers to spatially characterize the parameters of fire behavior. One line of research concerned the in-depth study of procedures and algorithms for the optimal definition of a Fire and Hazard Risk Map. The study was applied to a National Park, so we would like to capitalize on our experience in a wider geographical context, such as the Mediterranean one.
Among our expertise in the field of environmental and forest sciences, we also have those you are researching, in particular, the study of forest systems, the implementation of ecological models, the multitemporal analysis of natural systems using climate and satellite data, the impacts of anthropogenic activities on natural systems, the analysis of the degradation phenomena of natural systems (forest decline, erosion, desertification, etc.).
